If you have just had dermal fillers you may be concerned about what you need to do post treatment so that you get the best results from your fillers.
At Dr Linea Medical in Ipswich we take all of our dermal filler patients through a comprehensive list of instructions they need to adhere to after having this treatment. However, we do understand that some patients may like to have something to refer to after their treatment, and that is why we have created this handy dermal filler aftercare guide.
What to expect after having dermal filler treatment
Most patients will have no adverse effects after having dermal filler treatment, however occasionally they may experience some bruising, swelling, redness or tenderness. These side effects normally resolve themselves quite quickly after treatment.
Following our aftercare advice will help make sure that you heal as quickly as possible and that you get the best results from the treatment.
Don’t exercise
After dermal filler treatment it is best to avoid exercising for 24 hours. Exercising increases blood pressure which can worsen any swelling or bruising. Not exercising straight after your dermal fillers will improve the healing process and the results of your treatment.
Avoid heat
Excessive heat can cause blood vessels to expand and lead to swelling and bruising. Heat can also make the hyaluronic acid in dermal fillers break down more quickly which can have a knock on effect on the results and how long they last.
It is therefore best to stay out of the direct sun and avoid saunas, sunbeds, steam rooms and the spa for at least 24 hours
Don’t drink alcohol straight after dermal filler treatment
Alcohol thins the blood and this can have an impact on your dermal filler treatment. It can increase the chances of bruising and swelling so we would recommend avoiding alcohol for a minimum of 24 hours after your treatment.
It is also a good idea to avoid alcohol for 24 hours before your treatment as well for the same reasons.
Don’t use harsh skincare products
If you are using medical grade skincare or cosmetic products with active ingredients you should avoid using these for 24 hours after your dermal filler treatment. This would include cosmetics that include AHA’s, Retinoids and Vitamin C.
It is also recommended to avoid chemical peels, facial waxing, IPL and laser treatment for at least two weeks after your fillers. If you are in doubt about what products or treatments you should avoid after having dermal fillers you should seek advice from your aesthetics doctor.
Other things to avoid after having fillers
It is best not to touch your face too much after treatment and if you do, it’s important to be gentle. You may want to consider sleeping on your back when it is time for bed, so as not to put pressure on the areas that have been injected.
If you follow these aftercare instructions you should get the best results from your dermal filler treatment.
