Hyperhidrosis is the medical name for excessive sweating. Patients who suffer from this concern can find it embarrassing, and they may feel self conscious as a result of having this condition. Excessive sweating can affect people’s lives, causing social anxiety and leaving patients with unsightly sweat patches on their clothing.
What triggers excessive sweating?
There are two types of hyperhidrosis, primary and secondary.
Primary hyperhidrosis has no known cause, but medical experts think it may be an issue with the nervous system that controls sweating. Excessive sweating can start in childhood and may get worse in puberty. Patients may find that this is an inherited condition that runs in their family.
If you suffer from secondary hyperhidrosis there is likely to have been something that triggered the condition. Causes of secondary hyperhidrosis include:
- Hormonal changes that occur in pregnancy or in the menopause
- Certain medications
- Infections
- Anxiety
- Hypoglycemia also known as low blood sugar
- Hyperthyroidism or an overactive thyroid gland
- Alcoholism
- Spinal cord injury
- Obesity
- Tuberculosis
- Having an illness that can cause a fever
How do you stop hyperhidrosis?
There may be lifestyle changes that you can make to help with excessive sweating such as losing weight or stopping drinking. This concern can also be fixed easily by having anti-wrinkle injections using Botox.
Anti wrinkle injections can be expertly placed by a medical professional in the areas where you experience excessive sweating. The treatment blocks nerve signals to the sweat glands, reducing the amount of sweat that patients produce.
The treatment takes around seven to ten days to start working and most patients will have relief for around three to six months as a result of having this treatment.
